The
Government Museum in Chennai is more than
a century old and has the distinction of
being the first government sponsored museum
in the country. The museum has a huge variety
of articles showcased and the experience
is a memorable one.
The Government
Museum is Chennai is located in the Pantheon
complex in Egmore and is well within the
city limits. The journey across the various
sections of the museum is an experience
in itself. Be prepared to spend a whole
day or more looking at the various artefacts
in the museum. The government museum Chennai
has been divided into several segments
like archaeology, anthropology, botany,
zoology and sculpture.
Some of the attractions
in here include the exotic range of antique
jewellery. They are studded with precious
gems and are of exquisite designs. There
is a wonderful collection of musical instruments,
the sight of which every music lover will
cherish. Apart from these, the other items
of special interest would be Buddhist
antiques, a beautiful collection of Chola
art in bronzes, the arms gallery, its
pre historic collection and philatelic
collection. There is the art gallery,
a theatre and a natural history department.
The entrance fee
to the museum is nominal. You could visit
the Chennai Government museum on all days
except Fridays and national holidays.
