Subramanya
Bharathi is one of the finest poets that
Tamil Literature has seen. Right from his
childhood, when he was as young as seven
years, Subramanya Bhartahi could write verses
in Tamil. Though his hometown was Ettayapuram,
he spent his last days of his life in a
house in Triplicane. This house was bought
by the Government of Tamilnadu and opened
to the public on October 2nd 1993 which
is the Bharathiyar Illam mentioned here.
Bharathiyar
Illam takes us back to the glorious life
and times of Bharathiyar. The Illam has
a lot of photographs of his family and
friends. Also framed are many verses of
this versatile poet in his handwriting
which is a treat to all art and literature
patrons. Bharathiyar’s verse related
to the freedom movement is exceptionally
popular as it was heartfelt and brought
out the sentiments of the people of the
times clearly.
There are a lot of things of great importance
and relevance in the Bharathiyar Illam,
including a letter by Mahatma Gandhi to
him on the occasion of the opening of
the Bharathiyar Mani Mandapam in Ettayapuram.
Letters of Bharathiyar to Nellaiappar
have also been showcased. This important
monument is situated in the Triplicane
area of Chennai and hence is easily accessible
by way of public transport. This place
is a must visit for all art and literature
patrons.
